Description:
The progressive rock movement in the UK, which gained momentum in the late 1960s, had a profound influence on local bands across Europe, helping to transform the movement into something even larger. Among these, the emergence and rise of the Dutch progressive rock band Focus in the UK and US in 1972 was particularly noteworthy. Influenced by classical and jazz, they earned high acclaim for their primarily instrumental sound and achieved sales figures on par with British progressive rock bands. Following in their footsteps was Premiata Forneria Marconi (hereinafter PFM) from Milan, Italy.
PFM made a dramatic debut as the first artist on Manticore Records, a label founded by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, under the production of former King Crimson member Pete Sinfield. Their intricate, symphonic, and dramatic sound—heavily influenced by classical music—astonished audiences and demonstrated the true potential of Italian progressive rock. They also achieved success in Japan, performing there and helping to heighten interest in European progressive rock within the country. Building on their achievement as the first Italian pop artist to chart on the U.S. album charts, PFM aimed to follow in the footsteps of Focus and make a full-scale breakthrough, launching their first North American tour in 1974 with a total of 47 shows. The highlight of that tour was their performance at the festival held in Central Park on August 29 and 31. To promote the show and serve as a rehearsal, they performed a studio live session on a New York FM station on the 27th, which was broadcast. This album is a live recording of that broadcast, and in the studio, they performed a full set list that also served as a dress rehearsal for the festival.
Featuring the new lineup with Patrick Zivas (formerly of Area), who had recently joined the band, PFM demonstrated their prowess without hesitation, despite it being their first live studio performance on American radio. This performance, which fully conveys the appeal of PFM through tracks from their four previous albums, is a valuable historical archive of a band that has been active for over half a century!
