Kevin Ayers & The Whole World

Description:

In 1963, a band called Wild Flowers was formed in Canterbury, England. The band consisted of members who would later go on to form Soft Machine and Caravan. Soft Machine was formed in 1966, evolving from this group. The band’s name was taken from the works of William Burroughs, a Beat writer who had gained popularity. The members were Australian David Allen (g), Kevin Ayers (b, vo) and Robert Wyatt (ds, vo)—both former members of Wild Flowers—as well as Mike Latridge (kbds) and Larry Nolan (g), making a total of five. Nolan left the band shortly after they began performing, and the remaining four members recorded a demo. This material was included on two compilation albums (later combined into one) released by France’s BYG Records in 1967. After their first concert in France, Allen was unable to re-enter the UK due to drug and visa issues and left the band; Ayres took over on guitar, and the group continued as a trio. They signed with Probe, a subsidiary of ABC Records in the U.S., and produced their debut album in four days, making their debut in December 1968 with the album *The Soft Machine*. After the tour accompanying the album’s release, a tour-weary Kevin Ayers left the band. Kevin Ayers moved to the Spanish island of Ibiza, where he produced a solo album and made his solo debut the following year, in 1969, with *Joy of a Toy*. To tour, Kevin Ayers formed his own backing band, *The Whole World*, bringing in members of the Canterbury scene such as Mike Oldfield, David Bedford, Rol Coxhill, and Mick Fincher. In 1970, he released his new album *Shooting at the Moon* and embarked on a 19-date European tour. The concert held in the Netherlands on July 30 of that year was recorded and broadcast for a radio program. This album is a live recording based on that broadcast, featuring a complete recording of the concert, including the encore. Unlike Soft Machine, his unique sound—a blend of psychedelic pop with elements of experimental music—won him a new following. Import edition with Japanese packaging (featuring a Japanese obi strip and English liner notes with Japanese translations) Kevin Ayers (vocals, guitar) Mike Oldfield (bass) Robert Wyatt (drums) David Bedford (keyboards) Lol Coxhill (saxophone, bird whistle, flute) Guest Bridget St. John (vocals)
