A musician's musician" - it must be a great pleasure for any musician to be called a "musician's musician. And that is because he or she has reached the level of "virtuoso" or "maestro," in other words, a "maestro" as a musician. Alan Holdsworth is one of the few musicians and guitarists who have reached the level of such a "maestro. His numerous albums are now being released on hybrid SACD! After joining The Tempest, he rose to prominence as an up-and-coming guitarist, and although he joined top bands such as Soft Machine, New Tony Williams, New Lifetime, Gong, U.K., and Bluford, he migrated to new places to satisfy his own musical curiosity. As a result, Holdsworth's reputation as a guitarist was steadily growing, but he was on the verge of financial ruin.... Seeing his plight, Paul Williams, vocalist for The Tempest, approached him. He introduced him to several management companies and record labels, but he was unable to secure a contract, so he decided to release an album on his own.The result is "i.o.u.". The recording team consisted of jazz bassist Paul Carmichael, who also toured with Williams and Nuclear, and session drummer Gary Husband. All eight songs on the album are from Holdsworth's pen, and have an edgy rock sound with a jazz/fusion essence, reminiscent of the Tempest-era sound. The entire album showcases Holdsworth's unique guitar technique, and received the highest score in the "Guitar Player" magazine's review of the album at the time of its release. The title "i.o.u." reflects the fact that Holdsworth sold his guitars and borrowed money to make this album, but this album is without a doubt his masterpiece and a masterpiece of guitar albums.
