Mestizo Beat
Description:
Tingling breaks and throbbing Latin percussion! The second full-length album of gems, featuring sweltering soul, funk, psychedelic cumbia, homage to Afrobeat classics, and vocal numbers that are a must for rare groove fans! Mestizo beats from a melting pot of diverse influences and cultures have created and lead a new wave of instrumental West Coast Latin funk from Southern California. Their sophomore LP, Jaragua, highlights the group's dedication and resistance as they continue to push many boundaries while paying tribute to the generation before them. mestizo beats fuse the sounds of early 70s funk & soul, Latin jazz, and Afrobeat, taking musicality and production to the highest level, and a complete package of superbly crafted recordings and original songs on a brand new, freshly pressed 12" LP. Achilles 'Lito' Magaña and Agustin 'Gus' Magaña (Magaña Brothers), along with core group members Jose Castro, Pedro Flores, and chief horn arranger Jesse Audelo, all self-produced the compositions. The band also added a diverse array of skilled players to enhance the sonic elements required for each track. With contributions from other band members Doug Organ, Fabio de Souza, and Max O'Leary, as well as collaborations with horn player Jason Cressy and featured vocalist Jamie Allensworth, the LP is a vision of mestizo beat became the embodiment of the vision of Mestizo Beat. It is a true collective of musicians united by the common goal of delivering quality funk music. From the cinematic opening of the title track "Jaragua" and the black-sploitation inspired single "She's A Rose" to groove-centric cuts like "The Jaguar" and "Black Bag," Mestizo Beat's musical explorations are endless. The mestizo beat's musical explorations know no bounds. The group ventures further with soulful burners like "The Jaguar" and "Two Eleven," and shows its full potential on "II The Deepcyde," which features renowned guest vocalist Jamie Allensworth. The album closes with "Lotsapoppa," inspired by Nigerian disco funk, and "Cumbia de Jaragua" ventures into the cumbia genre for a diverse and exhilarating musical journey.Recorded and produced at SPC 166, the band's studio on a hillside in Topanga, California, each song showcases the unique talents of the ensemble. True to their sound and recording technique, "Jaragua" was tracked to 1/4" tape and mixed by Sergio Rios of Killion Sound.
