Two superb reggae covers with beautiful harmonies and one-drop feeling! From producer Dan Ubick's Lion's Den Studio comes a reimagining of a soul classic by Los Angeles' own Knight Owls. First, soul genius Eli "Paperboy" Reed takes on Ray Charles' classic "You Don't Know Me," and then rock steady champions Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos bring their beautiful soul harmonies to Eddie Kendricks' immortal "If You Let Me. On the A-side, "You Don't Know Me," Ubik had a difficult task.The search was on to find someone who could bring his own innate soulfulness to the songs sung by "The Geniuses" in their heyday. Eli "Paperboy" Reed grew up in Massachusetts and moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi at age 18, where he cut his teeth singing at juke joints throughout the Delta. He then spent a year as music minister at soul legend Mitty Collier's (Chess Records) South Side Church in Chicago before returning to the East Coast to record for Capitol Records, Warner Brothers, Coal Mine Records, and now Yep Rock. He has recorded for Capitol Records, Warner Brothers, Coal Mine Records, and now Yep Rock. Reed's voice on "You Don't Know Me" ranges from low to soulful high notes, perfectly setting the stage for this upbeat, roots-reggae-infused song. With a tip of the hat to legendary Jamaican producer Bunny "Striker" Lee, the Night Owls take Charles' classic soul and R&B standards into new territory.Ubik brought in Staten Island treasure Eamonn Doyle, who painstakingly crafted vocal harmonies true to Ray's original, while B-side Eddie Kendricks' ''If You Let Me'' feat. Jr Thomas & The Volcanos (Colemine Records)'' was rearranged here in honor of another legendary Jamaican singer, songwriter, and music producer, Winston Riley of the Techniques (Johnny Osbourne, Dave & Ansel Collins, Hortense Ellis, etc.). Originally released on Eddie Kendricks' 1972 masterpiece "People.... .Hold On" (Tamla/Motown), the song debuted with a more moody, dub-out tone, featuring the soulful lead of Jr. Thomas and Volcanos members Alex Desert (Hepcat, The Lions) and John Butcher ( The Expanders), perfectly complementing the stunning backing harmonies of the bass-heavy, one-drop feel.Keeping many of the harmonies of the original, Night Owls takes this much-loved classic to new heights and brings it to the dance floor.
