Formed in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri, Pavlovs Dog is one of the leading bands of the American progressive rock movement that emerged in the mid-1970s, led by the success of Kansas. The band's progressive rock sound, featuring lead vocalist David Surkamp with his distinctive voice and unique singing style, two keyboard players, and a violinist, was distinctly original and different from British progressive rock. The band debuted in 1975 with the album "Pampered Menial" and toured extensively but failed to achieve commercial success. The band began work on a new album as soon as possible. However, when the violinist and drummer left the band, guest players Bill Bruford, former drummer for Yes and King Crimson, and Andy McKay, saxophone player for Roxy Music, joined the band. The following year, 1976, "At The Sound Of The Bell" was released.The band went on a tour to promote the album with new drummer Kirk Sarkisian, and the concert in Detroit, Michigan on May 14 of the same year was recorded and broadcast for radio promotion.
