South Africa’s answer to Miles Davis’s *On the Corner* and *Return to Forever*! The long-awaited world-first reissue of the debut album by Spirits Rejoice, the band that led the South African jazz scene in the 1970s! Spirits Rejoice was formed by some of the most progressive and talented musicians representing South Africa at the time. Influenced by the music of Chick Corea, Weather Report, John McLaughlin, and Pat Metheny, they sought to create their own unique sound. The result of this quest is this album, *African Spaces* (1977). Their ambitious, uncompromising, and progressive sound represents the highest standard of fusion between the latest styles of North American jazz at the time and the styles of South African musicians, and this work can be said to rival the masterpieces left behind by the likes of Maronbo, Dala Blunt, and Batsumi. An 180-gram vinyl pressing remastered from the original master. Includes liner notes featuring new text by Francis Godin and rare photographs.
