Lyle Mays was the keyboard player and musical director of the Pat Metheny Group from its formation in 1978 until its cessation in 2006. He passed away this past February after a long battle with illness, and among his activities as a jazz piano trio while he was a member of the Pat Metheny Group, a rare live archive of an August 1981 performance at a live house in Atlanta, Georgia, has been discovered! The show, consisting of standard numbers and his own compositions, showcases the lyrical sound of modern jazz music that only Lyle Mays, a great admirer of Bill Evans, can deliver. Backing him up was a strong rhythm section, including Mark Johnson on bass (formerly of the Bill Evans Trio) and Danny Gottlieb on drums (formerly of the Pat Metheny Group, Elements, and Mahavishnu Orchestra), which reaffirmed Lyle Mays's ability as a jazz pianist.
