Description:

An acidic blow that shakes the mountains of Colorado! The latest CD reissue of Wakefield's "The Lost Wartag Tapes," a "phantom" gem of American psychedelic hardcore, a product of the tumultuous early 1970s! Formed in Pueblo, Colorado in 1969. A jam-oriented hard rock band at the end of the hippie movement, Wakefield gained a following in the local scene, opening for Fleetwood Mac (with Peter Green) and backing Chuck Berry in the early years. After several trips to Denver and Boulder, Colorado, and Seattle, Washington, the band recorded sessions at Warthog Studios, a low-budget studio in Denver, from 1970 to 1971, and the recordings lay dormant for many years until 2002, when they were reissued on the Colorado In 2002, the Colorado reissue label Gear Fab Records unearthed the recordings. The Lost Warthog Tapes" starts with a psychedelic rock sound that attacks with hard riffs and edgy lead guitars, and then unleashes it into uncharted territory. From the opening track "Bring It On" (M1), featuring a horn section, congas, and sharp guitars, the sound is further fueled by trumpet, French horns, and flute, and the band moves into a new era of chaos with a hint of 1960s psychedelia. The 8+ minute long number also enriches their expression. The ups and downs of numbers such as "Water" (M7), which flows like water after a flute introduction, "Snow Chard" (M8), in which a trumpet leads the song, and "Old Man" (M5), which condenses life itself into 11 minutes, are based on deep lyrics depicting loneliness and benevolence, It is understandable that some listeners interpret this as a concept album. However, it is also their nostalgia that makes them not only serious but also humorous. Let's Get Loaded" (M12) is a blatant drug song, but it does not have the dark undertones of the counterculture, and the song is accompanied by trumpets, handclaps, and a country-type guitar solo as the singers sing, "Let's get high! over trumpets, handclaps, and a country-type guitar solo. Rollin' Down the Highway" (M14) also has a lighthearted feel similar to a blues pastiche. Such a light and dark style is also accompanied by totality. The band broke up in 1974, and guitarist Bobby Barth joined Blackfoot, but Wakefield's name had long been forgotten in the annals of rock history. But now, the time has come for the clock to start ticking.
