Pharaoh Sanders, who carried on Coltrane’s legacy, traversed the boundaries between mainstream and alternative music, and continued to perform in a way that transcended the physical realm of sound to touch the spirit until the very end, passed away in 2022, deeply mourned by all. And Wendell Harrison, the leader of The Tribe, who has consistently and unwaveringly promoted Blackness and spirituality from his Detroit roots through independent releases. Though they were aware of each other’s existence, these two men—who never crossed paths during their lifetimes—will now, by a strange twist of fate, meet for the first time in the form of a tribute concert to Pharoah Sanders! In July 2025, under the banner of “Love & Peace”—the universal themes of love and peace that are central to spiritual jazz—the TRIBEJAZZENSEMBLE, led by Wendell, will ensure that the legacy of the late Pharoah Sanders is carried on forever, bringing spiritual healing to this chaotic, war-torn world and filling it with love and the hope for peace.
