Howlin' Wolf

Description:

Howlin' Wolf, the wolf who lived the blues stubbornly and single-mindedly. This LP reissue is a compilation of his 1951 and 1952 recordings for the Modern-affiliated RPM label, and an album released in 1962 on Crown Records, also a Modern-affiliated label. The album features Willie Johnston on guitar, mixing primitive delta blues with fancy jazz chords; Willie Steele on drums and unidentified musicians on backing vocals; and Ike Turner on vibrant piano, Wolfe barked out some rough and tough blues in West Memphis. The piano was out of tune, the guitar was out of tune, and the harmonica was out of key, but it was thumping and beautiful - no more shocking. At the beginning of his career, when he made his recording debut after the age of 40, Bruce's wolf rampage is sure to overwhelm you. The later Chicago recordings (Chess), with his partner Hubert Sumlin's guitar flying through the air, are wonderful, but nothing can compare to the charm of this wild Memphis-era Wolf.(*Note: The contents are 100% pure, rough Southern blues. Please handle with care.)
