The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band is renowned for its crisp sound. The clarinet section, which plays a central role in that sound, takes center stage in this volume! The Brain Ensemble Collection is a series comprising 226 sheet music titles and CDs performed by professional musicians, frequently performed at ensemble contests and various concerts. The fourth volume of the Clarinet Ensemble series features six original Japanese compositions, along with four arrangements of works by Mozart, Milhaud, and others. With a wide range of formations—from clarinet trios to octets—it’s ideal for selecting pieces for competitions and concerts. The highlight, of course, is “Scaramouche,” composed by Milhaud and arranged by Kazuhiro Morita. This score, which enjoys immense popularity and recognition, is finally available as an official recording! This arrangement was originally written about 30 years ago for the Tokyo Clarinet Ensemble and has long been a beloved piece in the Japanese clarinet community. Each of the three movements is stylish and enjoyable, making this a highly recommended choice for standard clarinet ensemble concert programs. Furthermore, the clarinet quintet version of the selections from the operetta *The Merry Widow* incorporates the “Waltz” and intricate ornamental passages that were not included in the wind band arrangement. The wind band arrangement is very well-known, and I believe it will be very easy for students to grasp the feel of the piece when performing it. In addition, all 10 pieces are highly recommended—ranging from familiar classics like “Scarborough Fair” and “The Magic Flute” to new, talked-about Japanese works such as “Wentos,” “Nobunaga,” and “Du Dan.” Brain Music
