Now in its 17th year, the “School Band Project” has launched with the goal of developing and promoting educational works that even small ensembles can perform!! “Kyōen” is a major event in Japan’s wind band community where renowned bands perform and showcase the latest works by Japanese composers. This year, too, a wide range of musical genres was featured. “Railway” by Shinya Takahashi, commissioned through the “School Band Project,” can be performed by as few as 10 musicians (10 parts plus 3 optional parts), while “Poem of the Earth” by Hiroki Takahashi can be performed by approximately 20 musicians (with flexible parts), and both pieces are set at a relatively low difficulty level. The album also includes the uncut versions of Hirokazu Fukushima’s “Variations on the Theme of ‘Soma Ryuzan’” and Jun Chosei’s “Sometimes the Road Is Beautiful,” both of which were performed at the 2013 National Wind Band Competition. Works by masterful composers such as Soichi Konagaya, Toshio Majima, and Naoshi Hoshide are also worth noting. Also worth noting is the debut performance by the Tokai University Wind Ensemble. The Heisei 26 JBA Shitaya Encouragement Award was presented to Toshio Majima’s “Lento Lamentoso” and Tadashi Sakai’s “March: ‘The Light of Hakugei Cape.’” Brain Music
