A program born from the desire of choir conductor Keiichi Shimizu—who has just celebrated his 60th birthday—to “hold a concert featuring my favorite choral works”! Teruyuki Noda’s *Youth*—in which Keiichi Shimizu himself participated as a singer during the 1981 world premiere conducted by Susumu Sekiya—is presented 38 years later in a soul-stirring performance that once again challenges the spirit of our times. In Akira Miyoshi’s *The Sea* (1987)—a work Shimizu deeply reveres and says has “been etched in his heart since its premiere”—the magnificent sounds of two pianos and five choirs swirl and resonate. In *Gift of the Dead* by Tokuhide Niimi—written in memory of the late Shin Sekiya and premiered in 2007 under Niimi’s own baton—Hiroshi Nagata’s poetry deeply touches the heart. Poulenc’s *The Human Face*, a monumental a cappella work for 12-part double choir—written in Nazi-occupied Paris and best exemplified by the final movement, “Freedom”—was the first piece (in the original language) that Shin Sekiya introduced to a Japanese amateur choir. This captivating concert features five choirs from the Shinyu-kai Chorus performing pieces personally selected by Keiichi Shimizu—who has just reached the milestone of his 60th birthday—from the works of composers who have had a profound influence on his musical career.
