From Cage's Six Pianos to Lucier's Teapot Groundbreaking arrangements by composers from around the world, volume two For the Hyper Beatles series, Aki Takahashi commissioned and performed arrangements of Beatles songs from forty-seven contemporary composers in fourteen countries. This second volume concentrates on the work of the American experimentalists. Opening with Cage's piece for six pianos (multi-tracked), it presents eleven highly individual arrangements by composers from Japan, Germany and Russia as well - newly re-recorded by Aki Takahashi. Born in Kamakura, she studied piano with her mother, Eiko Takahashi, then attended the high school attached to the Tokyo University of the Arts before completing her undergraduate and graduate studies at the university itself, where she studied with Georg Vásárhelyi. She gave her first recital in 1970, and in 1972 travelled to Europe, giving well-received recitals at the Berliner Festwochen and the Festival d'Automne à Paris among others. In 1973 her album The World of Aki Takahashi, containing twenty contemporary works from Japan and abroad, won the Award for Excellence at that year's Arts Festival. From 1975 she presented the series "Erik Satie in Concert" together with the planner and organiser Kuniharu Akiyama, which became a major catalyst for the "Satie rediscovery"; she edited the thirteen-volume Erik Satie: Complete Piano Works and recorded the complete piano music. In 1980 she made her first visit to the United States at the invitation of Morton Feldman, and in 1984 was a visiting professor at the California Institute of the Arts. She received the first Kenzo Nakajima Prize in 1983 and the first Kyoto Music Award (practical division) in 1986, and in 2003 won the 21st Kenzo Nakajima Prize for her Piano Dramatic series at Hamarikyu Asahi Hall. The Hyper Beatles series ran to four CDs, one of which was released in Britain and the United States and chosen by the New York Times as one of the best CDs of 1990. In 2006 she was invited to the Berlin festival MaerzMusik as pianist in residence, and her New York recital of Feldman's music that same year was selected by the same paper as one of the best concerts of 2006. Her CDs Schubert: Piano Sonatas and Morton Feldman: Trio brought her the Minister of Education Art Encouragement Prize for 2007, and Dangerous Night: Aki Takahashi Plays John Cage won the Award for Excellence at the 2008 National Arts Festival. She received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in autumn 2011 and the 23rd Asahi Prize for Contemporary Music in 2014. Her book Parlando: My Life at the Piano is published by Shunjusha. Camerata Tokyo
