Wien Nicolai Quartett

Description:

A Young, Traditional Quartet Named After the Founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Makes a Striking CD Debut The Vienna Nicolai String Quartet, named after Otto Nicolai, the founder of the Vienna Philharmonic—an orchestra with a glorious tradition of chamber music—has been carrying on that tradition since its founding in 2012. With a sense of mission to lead the next generation, the quartet has earned high acclaim for its performances. Composed of colleagues from the Vienna Philharmonic—Wilfried Kazuki (violin), Bernhard Naoki (cello)—the Hedenborg brothers—along with Gerhard Marschner (viola) and Benjamin Morrison (violin), have chosen Beethoven’s complete “Razumovsky” Quartets as their long-awaited debut recording. This marks the striking CD debut of this young, orthodox quartet. —Exuding enchanting grace and delicacy (Wiener Presse, May 2013) Members who have been active primarily in Vienna have come together to form a string quartet—the supreme form of chamber music. They specialize particularly in works from the early Viennese School and the Romantic period. Their music expresses not only their individual experience as soloists and chamber musicians, but also the traditional dignity and rich, colorful nuances they absorbed during their time as orchestral musicians with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. The essence of classical music can be felt in their rich resonance, as they listen to one another and play as if engaged in a dialogue. They have performed at music festivals and concert halls across Europe and Asia, establishing themselves as a leading string quartet. In addition to appearing in the Vienna Philharmonic Chamber Music Series organized by the Vienna State Opera, they have toured China, earning high praise at the National Center for the Performing Arts (Beijing) and the Shanghai East Art Center. In 2018, they made their long-awaited album debut with the release of a CD featuring all three of Beethoven’s “Razumovsky” string quartets on the Camerata Tokyo label, and embarked on a nationwide tour of Japan.
