Tamas Varga

Description:

Elegant performances that draw out the full beauty of the music Tamas Varga, principal cello of the Vienna Philharmonic, joins the accomplished pianist Mayumi Asano in two cello sonatas. Varga, always a player of great refinement, is once again heard at his best, while Asano brings an assertive, keenly judged sense of partnership to the duo. Fine performances that reveal all the beauty of the Grieg and Chopin sonatas. Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1969, he began the cello at the age of seven and studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Laszlo Mezo, Gyorgy Kurtag and Ferenc Rados; he was also influenced by Miklos Perenyi, Menahem Pressler and Uzi Wiesel. He is principal cello of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, and appears regularly as soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic, having performed under Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson Thomas, Christoph Eschenbach and Adam Fischer. As a member of the Ensemble Wiener Collage and the Wiener Kammerensemble he has appeared at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Salzburg Festival and elsewhere. His chamber partners have included Hildegard Behrens, Ferenc Bognar, Philippe Entremont, Zoltan Kocsis, Karl Leister, Peter Schmidl, Marjana Lipovsek, Wolfgang Schulz, Tamas Vasary and the Bartok String Quartet. He has released more than twenty CDs on Camerata Tokyo, Naxos and other labels. After graduating from the Toho Gakuen School of Music she moved to Germany, completing her graduate studies with distinction at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim and gaining the German state performer's diploma (Konzertexamen). She was a prizewinner at the Saint-Nom-la-Breteche International Piano Competition, first prize winner at the Luigia Stramesi International Piano Competition and at the Rovere d'Oro International Music Competition, and took third prize at the Maria Canals International Competition. She has given recitals in Germany, Italy, France and Spain and appeared with the orchestra of the Stadttheater Hildesheim. Since returning to Japan she has been active as a soloist, in chamber music with members of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, as a song accompanist and in two-piano repertoire for four and eight hands. She has released a CD of Japanese songs with the baritone Katsunori Kono. Her piano teachers were Tomoko Yamada, Naoyuki Taneda, Keiko Takeuchi and R. Benz, and she studied chamber music with P. Dann. Camerata Tokyo
