2011 marks the bicentennial of Liszt's birth, a year in which Liszt's unknown masterpieces will be revived. Although Liszt has many excellent piano works, it is not well known that there are works for violin and piano. This album contains all of Liszt's works for violin and piano on two discs. The most valuable recording is the Duet (Sonata), the score for which was discovered in 1963; the four-movement work is inspired by Chopin's mazurkas and Polish folk melodies, which Liszt wrote with even greater poetic and virtuosic virtuosity. This duet, which demands a high level of skill and musicality from both violinist and pianist, is a great work that offers a different kind of appeal from Liszt's piano works. Camerata Tokyo
