"Sharaku" is directed by Frankie Sakai, a scholar of Sharaku, who, after 30 years of planning the film adaptation, serves as executive producer and also stars as Shigezaburo Tsutaya, the maverick genius of the Edo publishing world. Directed by Masahiro Shinoda (known for *The Setouchi Boys' Baseball Team*, *Boyhood*, and *Spy Zorge*), the film brings together a top-tier creative team, including composer Toru Takemitsu, production designer Katsumi Asaba, and costume designer Setsu Asakura. Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Tombo. Riona Hazuki (making her film debut in this film) plays Hanazato. Shima Iwashita, an indispensable presence in Shinoda’s works, portrays Okan, the ringleader who controls the street performers. Additionally, Shiro Sano plays the genius artist Utamaro, while Tsurutaro Kataoka, Yasusuke Bando, and Toshiya Nagasawa appear as real-life figures from the era, rounding out the supporting cast. Scenes filmed at the "Kanamaruza" in Kotohira, Shikoku—a designated Important Cultural Property—feature renowned Kabuki actors such as Living National Treasure Tomijirō Nakamura, along with Shibazaru Nakamura and Danzo Ichikawa, delivering a truly immersive and powerful experience. Furthermore, state-of-the-art digital compositing technology successfully brings to life the breathtaking scenery of Edo’s streets, as well as the bustling crowds of the Nihonbashi and Yoshiwara districts.
