Pianist Tomoki Kitamura, hailed as an “artist endowed with philosophical wisdom” for his performances brimming with poetic thought and his innovative programs that shed new light on the music. Following his critically acclaimed album *At Twilight*, in which he interpreted the rise and fall of Europe through the works of Brahms, Liszt, and Berg, he now presents his fourth CD—his first in three years. Kitamura currently resides in Berlin. While continuing to perform primarily in Europe and Japan, he is also engaged in research on historical performance practice under Jesper Christensen at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. The title of the new CD is *Bagatellen*. It features Bartók’s early work of the same name, Beethoven’s late works, and Brahms—a pioneer of late-period miniatures. Kitamura writes as follows: The notes on the staff may be the best way to express the sudden sensation of music—yet they are perhaps only one possible outcome. Only the composer heard the music’s earliest form, before it had even become notes. Can we not imagine the beginning of the music that the composer heard—through the gaps and the sequence of these pieces, written freely without being bound by the strict constraints of form?
