Description:

The CD series "Contemporary Japanese Composers" has been issued since the first half of the 1992 fiscal year, with the aim of documenting the fruits of creative work systematically and continuously. Volume 54 is devoted to Takeo Hoshiya, a composer of action who formed ensembles with musicians of his own generation while still a student and who, alongside his own composing, continues to introduce a wide range of works from Japan and abroad. Takeo Hoshiya is the founder of Ensemble Bois, a group whose players - among them Junichiro Taku and Tomoki Tai - are central figures in the Japanese contemporary music scene, and he has sustained a distinguished body of activity together with Masamichi Kinoshita, Toshiya Watanabe and Takashi Tokunaga. While holding that "music is one means of expressing something that cannot be explained in words", Hoshiya insists on the need to look closely, since "in practice it contains both what is (relatively) easy to explain and what is hard to explain". This is evidence of a long-standing concern with the nature of communication in music, developed through intensive collaboration with performers. That collaboration runs so deep that the cellist Tomoki Tai built his own microtonal positive organ in order to perform Hoshiya's music, and the composer's search has led him to devise a new form of precise notation that is neither traditional staff notation nor graphic score. The works recorded here show the results in full. Born in Tokyo in 1979; resident in Fukui. He studied composition with Jo Kondo, Satoru Ikeda and Shin Sato. While still a student he founded Ensemble Bois with musicians of his own generation. In 2005 he took part in Ensemble Nomad's UK tour; in 2007 he won First Prize in the Salvatore Martirano Award; in 2010 he was an invited composer at the Takefu International Music Festival; in 2011 he took part in the Royaumont seminar in France; in 2013 he was an invited composer at the Daegu International Music Festival; and in 2014 he participated in Cafe Budapest in Hungary and in a Japan-Canada contemporary music exchange project. He is a member of Ensemble Contemporaryα and of the composers' group Path. Since 2010 he has run the planning group "Shape of Time Project" with the cellist Tomoki Tai, and since 2016 "OFFICE Deku" with Hideo Kikuchi, presenting projects centred on chamber music. Fontec
