Around the time Sakamoto began working on his fourth solo album, *Music Encyclopedia*, filming took place in Tokyo over a mere week. A small team of six, including director Leonard, documented the country of Japan, the city of Tokyo, and the musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. After its completion in 1985, the film was screened at international film festivals in Rotterdam, Locarno, and São Paulo, and in Japan, it premiered on June 9 of that year at the 1st Tokyo International Film Festival. Following its broadcast on French television in 1986, the VHS and DVD releases remained difficult to obtain for a long time; however, in recent years, 16mm film reels that had been lying dormant in a warehouse were discovered, restored, and digitized. The film features rare interviews with Sakamoto and footage of him recording in the studio, as well as commercials in which he appeared, YMO’s farewell concert, and a memorable scene from Nagisa Oshima’s *Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence* (1983). Ryuichi Sakamoto, a world-renowned musician who continues to live on in people’s hearts. This long-lost documentary, which allows viewers to experience the “Sounds of Tokyo” through portraits of his younger days, has finally been released on DVD after nearly 40 years! (C)RS
