Gabriel Latchin Trio's long-awaited new release is a collection of Gershwin songs I also wrote the obi liner for their last album, "Viewpoint," in which I remember concluding, "Enjoy this album to your heart's content while you wait patiently for the next one." Two years have passed since then. Two years have passed since then, and the long-awaited new work has been released. The same Joe Farnsworth (ds) and Jeremy Brown (bass) as on the previous album have teamed up to perform Gershwin's numbers. The charm of Gershwin's music is its sophisticated melodies and lyrics, and the depth of nostalgia that allows for the individuality and expression of the musicians who sing and play while maintaining the Gershwin color. George Gershwin produced some of the most memorable orchestral compositions of the 20th century, the source of which, needless to say, is the piano. The composer himself played in that style at a party with a woman by his side. These pieces have long been beloved, with many musicians finding new sides to them through the trials of changing times.The Gabriel Latchin Trio's arrangement, which they attempted on this album, succeeded in highlighting the compositional excellence of the original. And for those who wonder, "What is it like to keep playing standards? I applaud the Gabriel Latchin Trio for proving that, when performed by world-class musicians, familiar tunes can be made new and exciting, while at the same time reminding us of the origins upon which much of today's jazz was built.
