The gold standard of the post-rock/Chicago acoustic school, the 1998 3RD is now available on clear-with-white high-melt vinyl with domestic obi! Domestic vinyl with obi. The vinyl cover is the same as the direct import version. Liner notes are not included. TORTOISE is a Chicago post-rock/acoustic group consisting of DOUGLAS MCCOMBS, JOHN HERNDON, DAN BITNEY, JOHN MCENTIRE, DAVID PAJO, and JEFF PARKER, The group's music freely crosses jazz, electronica, dub, and contemporary music, and has made a significant presence in the alternative scene of the 1990s. TORTOISE's third album, "TNT," was produced over a 10-month period in 1997 and released in 1998. Furthering the editorial approach established on the previous album, "MILLIONS NOW LIVING WILL NEVER DIE," the band introduced non-linear digital recording/editing. New timbres such as strings and wind instruments are also actively incorporated to create a multi-layered and fluid soundscape spanning 65 minutes. The suite from "IN SARAH, MENCKEN, CHRIST, AND BEETHOVEN THERE WERE WOMEN AND MEN" to "JETTY" explores electronics and computer music. On the other hand, the live-oriented rhythmic ensemble is still present, with an organic drum/bass/guitar/mallet/percussion performance throughout the album. TORTOISE's newest member, JEFF PARKER, is also a significant addition to the band, and his jazz sensibilities add flexibility and breadth to the sound.
