Description:
<<In Memory of Dohnányi A superb masterpiece by Dohnányi and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra! This is the world's first SA-CD release of this master tape. This is the world's first SA-CD release! Christoph von Dohnányi (1929-2025), who died on September 6, 2025 at the age of 95, recorded five symphonies and three orchestral works with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in his late 40s and early 50s. Since the recording with the Vienna Philharmonic and Decca began in 1973, both have made relatively consistent recordings of Mendelssohn's symphonies, even after digital recording. The Mendelssohn Symphonies is also known as the only recording of the complete Mendelssohn symphonies by the Vienna Philharmonic in its current state, and has been reissued many times because of its supple performance and its appeal as an excellent recording from the late analog to early digital recording period. The symphonies were first recorded in June 1976 with Nos. 1 and 5, followed by No. 2 in November and No. 3 in September, and then in December 1978, DECCA's first digital recording with the Vienna Philharmonic (recorded at 18bit/48kHz at the time. The release was preceded by the "New Year's Concert" with Boskovsky on January 1, 1979), with No. 4 and two overtures. D'Honagni has recorded a great deal with the Cleveland Orchestra on Decca and other labels, including many great performances, but his recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic are also well established, and many listeners will probably consider this Mendelssohn to be the first representative recording of him. The performances of each piece are well received for their earnest conducting and music making with an emphasis on the music rooted in the tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic, while the overall high standard of the music, including the second soloist Gruberova and other excellent vocalists, and the high level of performance with little difference between the best and worst of each piece, is also a reason for the popularity of this recording. The high standard of the overall performance is probably one of the reasons for the popularity of this concert. This is the first SA-CD release of this album, and we have further improved the sound quality, so we hope that this memorial release will be an opportunity to rediscover the greatness of Dohnányi and the Vienna Philharmonic. The reissue of this album was originally scheduled for September, but due to production reasons, it had to be postponed. (1/2)
