Karajan recorded the Symphonie fantastique three times, but the performance on this album is the last one recorded in the 1970s with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and this is the first SA-CD-SHM release of the work. The piece is a representative of the early Romantic period, and was composed by the composer, who superimposed his own experience of a lost love on the dream of an artist, and it features the largest orchestra of its time and a variety of orchestral techniques.
