A project commemorating the 90th anniversary of Toru Takemitsu’s birth. This album—featuring Takemitsu’s second work conducted by his friend Nassen—makes its return after a 10-year hiatus. A selection of seven works from the final decade of Takemitsu’s career Composer Oliver Nassen is not only a specialist in contemporary music as a conductor but also had a close personal friendship with Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996); prior to the release of this DG recording, he had also recorded with Virgin. Takemitsu also wrote several pieces for the London Sinfonietta beginning with “It Rains” in 1982, leaving behind a collection of works for chamber orchestra. Recorded between 1996 and 1997, this album features a selection of seven pieces composed between 1985 and 1993. In “Quotations from a Dream”—one of his best-known late works, which incorporates excerpts from Debussy’s *La Mer*— features performances by Takemitsu’s close friends Peter Serkin and Paul Crosley, who passed away in February 2020; this recording holds strong significance as a definitive interpretation by the very musicians who supported Takemitsu’s works. It is believed that this DG release was recorded as a tribute to Takemitsu, who passed away in February 1996; three pieces were recorded at two different venues in December of that year, and the aforementioned “Quotations from a Dream” was recorded the following year after the first anniversary of his death. Nassen also conducted the concerts held at the “Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall: Takemitsu Memorial” on the 10th and 20th anniversaries of Takemitsu’s passing, and these performances were released on a different label as part of this Tower Records compilation series. Among them, the 2016 live recording (currently available as TWFS90013; Peter Serkin, who was originally scheduled to perform, canceled due to health reasons), he performed “Quotations from a Dream”—the only work from outside the 1960s—during that concert. Nassen himself passed away two years after that concert. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Toru Takemitsu’s birth, we have reissued this recording in its original form, including a tribute to both Nassen and Peter Zerkin, who were deeply involved with his work. The liner notes are the same as those included in the original release. Additionally, this issue of “Vintage+plus Vol. 30” features a total of four titles.
