Marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. Abbado's complete symphonies and complete overtures with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between the mid-1980s and 1990, gathered in a 7-disc set. Abbado's first complete Beethoven symphony cycle, recorded live with the Vienna Philharmonic between 1985 and 1988, together with a number of the overtures, the Choral Fantasy and the cantatas, is here joined by the remaining eight overtures - taped in studio sessions in three separate batches between 1988 and 1990 in the Musikvereinssaal and the Konzerthaus - to form a complete symphonies-and-overtures edition on seven discs (originally issued as a 6-disc symphony set and a 2-disc overture set). Abbado had already recorded the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies and the Creatures of Prometheus overture with the Vienna Philharmonic for DECCA in 1966 and 1968 (issued in the earlier Vintage series; currently deleted), so these are re-recordings made some twenty years later. He went on to record two further cycles with the Berlin Philharmonic for DG (1999-2000 and 2001, sharing the same Ninth), but this Vienna set deserves recognition as one of the supreme achievements of the pre-Bärenreiter approach, and as a remarkable meeting of Abbado's confident interpretations at the height of his powers with the Vienna Philharmonic's own strong musical personality. The substantial booklet runs to 40 pages. These recordings began in 1985, the year before Abbado took up the post of Music Director of the Vienna State Opera (a position he held until 1991), and at DG he was regarded, alongside Karajan, as one of the label's two central conductors. His Vienna years, up until his move to the Berlin Philharmonic as Karajan's successor in 1990, were arguably the period in which - not least in terms of his health - Abbado was most fully able to realise his ambitions, and many listeners rate the recordings from this alert, inspiration-filled period most highly of all. The booklet reproduces the texts from the previous releases of the symphony and overture sets, and the original jacket designs have been retained. Vintage+plus Vol. 30 comprises four titles in all.
