Description:
A tribute album to the renowned soprano Jessye Norman, who passed away in September 2019. Released by the PHILIPS label, this 2-CD set compiles the highlights of three German-repertoire albums—a fitting tribute. Jesse Norman, a legendary soprano who enjoyed a global career beginning in the mid-1970s, passed away in September 2019 at the age of 74. As you know, she began her career with recordings for the former EMI label shortly after her debut, and from the 1970s onward, she signed with Philips and DG, leaving behind a wealth of classic recordings. She was also skilled in Black spirituals and jazz, and was a rare singer who possessed overwhelming vocal power and quality as a dramatic soprano, particularly in art songs and opera. As a soloist, she performed with many renowned conductors, and I believe she was an indispensable figure during the heyday of the CD. To pay tribute to her career and her contributions to musical education, this commemorative album compiles three albums—Wagner recorded with Colin Davis in 1975, R. Strauss song cycle, and *Das Lied von der Erde*, recorded in 1982 with Davis again at the helm. In her already deeply expressive rendition of “Liebestod” from *Tristan und Isolde*, she overwhelms the listener with a timbre that would later take the world by storm (though her later EMI recording with Tenschtedt, the 1987 DG recording, and the live performance with Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic are also remarkable), she displays a taut, resonant quality in the *Wesendonck Lieder*, and in the *Four Last Songs* and the song cycle, she offers a delicate and intelligent interpretation that was considered the definitive recording of these works in the early days of digital recording; as for *Das Lied von der Erde*, she delivers a grand-scale performance that resonates beautifully with Davis’s dynamic, wide-ranging tempo. While this recording of *Das Lied von der Erde* is a hidden gem in the market, its profound melancholy, the depth of its intellectual interpretation, and its perfectly controlled expressiveness and grand scale are virtually unparalleled; it is a performance that deserves far greater recognition. For this reissue, the analog recordings were sourced directly from the original analog master tapes in the country of origin and newly digitized using high-bit, high-resolution mastering (192 kHz/24-bit). The vibrant sound quality is a must-hear. The booklet features a new introductory essay by Haruo Yamada and runs 32 pages, including bilingual lyrics. The original jacket design has also been retained. Additionally, this release of “Vintage+plus Vol. 29” includes a total of seven titles.
