Description:

A memorial release. The three albums that the great gut-string cellist Anner Bylsma, who died in July 2019, recorded for PHILIPS, gathered on two discs. First time as a set, newly remastered from the original master tapes held in the Netherlands. Anner Bylsma died on 25 July 2019 at the age of 85. This set brings together on two discs the three unusual albums of Romantic and later repertoire that he recorded for PHILIPS between the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Bylsma, who was principal cello of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1962 to 1968, also recorded Chopin's Cello Sonata, Debussy's Sonata and works by Reger and Hindemith. That a cellist so strongly identified with the Baroque should have taken part in albums of Romantic and later music - Messiaen included - is fascinating, and this memorial release puts the fact in the spotlight. Although all three albums were issued on LP in Japan, only the Messiaen appeared on CD, in the overseas "DUTCH MASTERS" series and in an early Japanese CD edition. The Mendelssohn was first issued on CD by Universal Korea in 2012, and the Liszt and Messiaen followed in 2015; internationally, the recordings remain unavailable on CD. The Mendelssohn and Liszt now appear on CD in Japan for the first time, and this is the first time the material has been gathered as a set. On the Liszt album Bylsma plays in three of the five works. The freshness of the Mendelssohn is astonishing, while the shadowed sonorities of the Liszt and the plain-spoken expression in the Messiaen could come from no one else. Here is a great musician who transcends the categories of modern and period performance. As with the other early-music reissues in this series, the booklet carries a new introductory essay by Takaki Yazawa, together with a translation of the notes written by Bylsma himself and by Stanley Hoogland for the Mendelssohn LP. The original LP cover artwork is used, and the recordings have been digitised from the original analogue master tapes in the Netherlands using high-bit, high-sampling-rate mastering (192kHz/24bit). This edition of Vintage+plus, Vol. 29, comprises seven titles in all.
