Schumann, a composer Kubelik was particularly adept at—the world’s first SA-CD release of his first recording. An outstanding performance and recording that brings out the historic, superb sound of the BPO from that era! Newly mastered in Germany from the original analog master tapes Kubelik’s complete set of Schumann symphonies is also highly regarded for the subsequent Sony recordings made with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1978–79, but these recordings for DG—made while Kubelik was still in his prime—leave a particularly powerful impression, as he boldly drives the music forward with tremendous momentum using the Berlin Philharmonic from the Karajan era. Completed between 1963 and 1964, this became the first complete set of Schumann symphonies for both DG and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1963, Kubelik signed with DG and began session recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic. That year, in addition to Schumann’s Fourth Symphony, he recorded a collection of Wagner’s orchestral works, Handel’s *Water Music*, and Schumann and Grieg’s piano concertos with G. Ander—many of which would later be regarded as classic recordings. It is said that Kuberlik originally aspired to become a conductor after hearing Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic perform when he was 14 years old, so it may be significant that he chose Schumann’s Symphony No. 4—renowned as a masterpiece performed by both artists—for one of his earliest recordings (Furtwängler had recorded the Fourth Symphony for DG at the same Church of Jesus Christ exactly ten years earlier). Since many of the leading German and Austrian conductors of the time often performed only Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in concert, DG had not yet released a complete set of his symphonies, which may explain why the young Kubelik was chosen for the project. That said, Schumann’s works—which can be considered quintessentially German Romantic—are an important part of any orchestra’s repertoire, and this choice clearly demonstrates the high regard in which Kubelik, then in his late 40s, was held. Alongside the complete Dvořák symphony cycle he would later record, these recordings are undoubtedly representative of this pairing. (1/2)
