Grumiaux’s collection of violin sonatas (15 sonatas and 1 set of variations), recorded with Clean, has been reissued with its original cover art from the first release. The definitive recording! Grumiaux is often thought of as a “Mozart specialist,” and his seamless technique and brilliant tone were truly ideal for performing Mozart’s works—with their beautiful melodies and simple structures—with unparalleled beauty. In fact, when he made his American debut in 1951, it was Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 that brought him tremendous success. Furthermore, when he signed with Philips (now Decca) in the Netherlands in 1953, the first recordings he made—and the performances that catapulted his name to worldwide fame—were Mozart’s Violin Concertos Nos. 3 and 4. Furthermore, his partnership with Clara Haskil (1895–1960)—a Romanian-born pianist widely recognized as the greatest “Mozart interpreter” of her generation—further deepened Grumiaux’s connection with Mozart. This recording was made digitally—a quarter-century after his collaboration with Haskil—with Walter Klein (1928–1991), a pianist from Graz, Austria, who had also earned a reputation for his Mozart interpretations. Recorded over a leisurely period from 1981 to 1983, this set ultimately became Grumiaux’s final work. Both the earlier recording with Haskil and the new one with Klein can be considered equally outstanding performances. The earlier recording features Haskil’s introspective piano playing, which exquisitely supports the young Grumiaux, while the newer one showcases Grumiaux and Klein working together as equals, taking turns in the spotlight and supporting one another. The older recording captivates with Haskil’s depth and Grumiaux’s beautiful tone, while the newer one captivates with Klein’s intellectual clarity and Grumiaux’s deepened artistry—their performing styles and strengths are distinct. As a result, two magnificent recordings of Mozart’s violin sonatas were preserved at the beginning and end of Grumiaux’s career, respectively. This was indeed a great stroke of luck, both for Grumiaux and for us music lovers. For this reissue, we have retained the original jacket design and included a new introductory essay in the booklet. Additionally, this volume of Vintage+plus (Vol. 28) features a total of seven titles.
