Bollett, considered a direct descendant of Liszt and the last heir to Romantic pianism, left behind this 1982 recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3—often hailed as the pinnacle of technical virtuosity and elegance—which is now being reissued after a long absence. This masterpiece, which encapsulates the very essence of Bolet’s artistry, is finally being reissued as a domestic release with its original jacket. Although Bolett is famous as a Liszt interpreter, he was also exceptionally skilled at performing Rachmaninoff. When he performed the Third Concerto with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra shortly after his debut recital, he received rave reviews from both the audience and the orchestra members, and he continued to perform it many times thereafter. While DECCA’s catalog includes only the Piano Concerto No. 2, which has been reissued several times, this recording of the No. 3 is a rare gem that, for some reason, has rarely been reissued—even as an import (though budget-priced import editions are now available). Many who are aware of this recording’s existence cite it as one of the finest albums of this piece, thanks to its overwhelming virtuosity and the exceptionally beautiful tone that permeates the entire recording. It is hard to believe this was recorded during a session in his late years at age 67, as his outstanding technique remains as strong as ever. It is a masterful performance that conveys a sense of resonance through his phrasing at a measured tempo, a sound befitting Rachmaninoff’s works—which place the utmost emphasis on beautiful tone—and a palpable sense of passion. It is an album that brilliantly adorns the recording history of this piece, allowing the work’s true grandeur to shine through. While the original album featured only this Piano Concerto No. 3, this reissue includes eight additional tracks from a separate collection of Rachmaninoff piano works recorded in 1987. These solo pieces allow listeners to fully savor Bolet’s pianism. For this reissue, we have retained the original jacket design and included a new introductory essay by Shinnosuke Nagai in the booklet. His lucid commentary, which delves into the essence of Bolet’s artistry, is a must-read. Additionally, this Vintage+plus Vol. 26 series features a total of seven titles.
