Haitink's second Beethoven cycle – the definitive one – recorded to crown the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's centenary. Restored in its original cover artwork, with a new introductory essay. Haitink led the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam from 1961 to 1988, and this Philips Beethoven cycle can fairly be described as the summation of that partnership. Winner of the 1988 Record Academy Award in Japan and widely acclaimed elsewhere, it is a thoroughgoing classic. The beautiful acoustic of the Concertgebouw, the orchestra's exceptional musicianship and Haitink's newly matured command all come together at the highest level, making this a rare achievement among Beethoven cycles. Produced to mark the orchestra's centenary, and coinciding with Haitink's departure, it was greeted with a considerable response on release. It was subsequently reissued at budget price for many years, but in recent times has been available only within imported box sets. The Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, founded in 1888 (today the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), celebrates its 130th anniversary this year (2018), and to mark the occasion this classic cycle is released once again on its own, in the original cover design of its first issue. Haitink had already recorded the symphonies for Philips with the London Philharmonic in the 1970s (reissued as PROC1614), performances marked by an almost aggressive forward thrust, bold interpretative decisions and vivid sound. The present cycle, taped between 1985 and 1987, is by contrast measured and deeply considered, with a sense of classical elegance and weighty tradition. Period-instrument Beethoven was already widespread in the Netherlands at the time, and this cycle might be seen as the exemplary modern-instrument statement of its era. This reissue adopts the original cover design of the first release, and the booklet is based on the original as well, with a generous selection of photographs. A newly written introductory essay by Nobuyasu Matsuoka has been added to the booklet. Vintage+plus Vol.26 comprises seven titles in all.
