The music of Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic overwhelms the listener with its sumptuous and magnificent sound, but on this disc, the opposite is true, with a delicate, chamber music that radiates a different charm. Edith Mathis' tender and compassionate singing in the fourth movement is also not to be missed.
