This 5-disc set compiles the unfinished Bruckner cycle by Haitink and the Vienna Philharmonic, originally released on the old PHILIPS label. The *Te Deum* is being reissued for the first time since its original release. Includes the original liner notes from each release. Originally planned as a complete set for the old PHILIPS label starting in the mid-1980s, Haitink and the Vienna Philharmonic’s Bruckner recordings were halted due to label circumstances at the time, resulting in a release that included only four symphonies and the *Te Deum*. When Symphony No. 4 was recorded in 1985, it attracted a great deal of attention as Haitink’s second complete cycle; however, much like his Mahler symphony recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic—which were also abandoned (reissued in 2014 as PROC1428)—it ultimately left fans disappointed. Compared to his earlier complete set with the RCO and the subsequent re-recordings of Symphonies Nos. 7–9 (reissued in 2012 as PROC1230), the fact that this was with the Vienna Philharmonic led many to expect even more grand, definitive performances of each piece—making the project’s halt all the more disappointing. Since then, these recordings have been reissued numerous times on their own as classic examples of the Vienna Philharmonic’s recent Bruckner performances, but they have recently been discontinued or gone out of print, making it difficult to collect the complete set. This reissue brings together all four albums for the first time and also revives the “Te Deum,” which was originally released only as a coupling track on the two-disc set of Symphony No. 5. Although Haitink subsequently performed and recorded Bruckner with other prestigious European and American orchestras besides the Vienna Philharmonic—and released several notable recordings—many listeners undoubtedly still look forward to his performances with the Vienna Philharmonic. Although these old PHILIPS recordings date from the early to mid-digital era, they were produced by the already well-established PHILIPS team and are characterized by superb sound quality that captures the hall’s rich reverberation and the orchestra’s distinctive character. For this reissue, we have included the original liner notes that appeared when each album was first released. You can enjoy these notes exactly as they were at the time of the original release. Additionally, the original jacket designs for each album are featured inside the booklet. This edition of Vintage+plus Vol. 25 features a total of seven titles.
