The Melos Quartet's landmark Deutsche Grammophon debut, released in Japan for the first time: three masterpieces of twentieth-century Hungary in warm-blooded, organically breathing performances. Two of the works appear on CD for the first time anywhere, newly restored from the original German master tapes. The Melos Quartet was formed in Germany in 1965 by principal players of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra: Wilhelm Melcher, first violin (1940-2005); Gerhard Voss, second violin (b. 1939); Hermann Voss, viola (b. 1934); and Peter Buck, cello (b. 1937). Melcher studied with Lehn and Carmirelli, the Voss brothers with Sándor Végh, and Buck with Ludwig Hoelscher. The name "Melos" combines the "Mel" of Melcher with the "os" of Voss, punning on the Latin melos, meaning "song" or "melody". With an average age of just 28, the ensemble won acclaim from the outset, signing a recording contract with Intercord in 1967 and releasing a complete cycle of the Beethoven quartets for the composer's bicentenary in 1970. In 1969 they signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and went on recording for the label for twenty years. In the early 1970s they toured the Soviet Union, the United States and South Africa, and in 1978 they undertook a Far Eastern tour that included Japan. These 1970 recordings of Bartók, Kodály and Weiner were the quartet's DG debut and are released in Japan for the first time. The players engage with these twentieth-century Hungarian scores with complete seriousness and a warm, organic sound, producing performances of real substance — arguably a mark of the confidence the Voss brothers drew from inheriting the Hungarian performing tradition directly from Végh. For this reissue we returned to the original German analogue master tapes, newly digitised at 192kHz/24bit and remastered from that source. The booklet reproduces alternative sleeve designs in colour and carries a newly written introductory essay. Five titles in all are being released in this Melos Quartet reissue series.
