Winner of the 1989 Record Academy Award: a classic recording that draws out the Romantic character of these works with subtle shading, freshness and clarity. Includes two earlier Brahms recordings issued on CD for the first time worldwide. The Melos Quartet was founded in 1965 by principal players of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Its members were Wilhelm Melcher, first violin (1940-2005); Gerhard Voss, second violin (b. 1939); Hermann Voss, viola (b. 1934); and Peter Buck, cello (b. 1937). Melcher studied with Erich Röhn and Pina Carmirelli, the Voss brothers with Sándor Végh, and Buck with Ludwig Hoelscher. The name "Melos" combines the "Mel" of Melcher with the "os" of Voss, playing on the Latin melos, meaning "song" or "melody". With an average age of 28, they won high praise from the outset. Intercord signed them in 1967, and in 1970, the bicentenary of Beethoven's birth, they released a complete cycle of his string quartets. In 1969 they signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, recording for the label over twenty years, and made their first recording for it in 1970 (Bartók, Kodály and Weiner). They toured the Soviet Union, the United States and South Africa in the early 1970s, and in 1978 made a Far Eastern tour including Japan and Australia. The Schumann and Brahms recorded digitally in 1987-88 won the chamber music category of the Record Academy Award for 1989, presented by Ongaku no Tomo Sha, and is regarded as their calling card. As a coupling, their earlier 1972 recordings of the Brahms Quartets Nos. 3 and 1 appear on CD for the first time worldwide; their fresh sensibility and unaffected directness have an appeal quite distinct from the later versions. For this reissue the original analogue master tapes were traced and newly digitised at 192kHz/24bit and remastered. The booklet reproduces alternative jacket designs in colour and carries a newly written introductory essay. Five Melos Quartet reissues are being released.
