The Melos Quartett's Mozart recordings gathered together for the first time The Melos Quartett was founded in 1965 by principal players of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The founding members were Wilhelm Melcher (1940-2005), first violin, Gerhard Voss (b. 1939), second violin, Hermann Voss (b. 1934), viola, and Peter Buck (b. 1937), cello. Melcher studied with Erich Röhn and Pina Carmirelli, the Voss brothers with Sándor Végh, and Buck with Ludwig Hoelscher. The name "Melos" combines the "Mel" of Melcher with the "os" of Voss, playing on the Latin melos, meaning "song" or "melody". With an average age of just 28, the players won high praise from the outset. In 1967 they signed a recording contract with the German label Intercord, releasing a complete Beethoven quartet cycle to mark the bicentenary of the composer's birth in 1970. In 1969 they signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and went on to make a large number of recordings over the next twenty years, beginning in 1970 with Bartók, Kodály and Weiner. They toured the Soviet Union, the United States and South Africa in the early 1970s, and in 1978 undertook a Far East tour that included Japan and Australia. The late Mozart quartets were recorded between 1976 and 1983. Free from any single regional tradition - Viennese, Parisian or Dresden - this is European quartet playing in the broadest sense, and Mozart's music breathes with complete naturalness. Despite the span of years involved, the set has the unity of a cycle taped in a single stretch, testimony to the unwavering consistency of the quartet's style, sonority and technique. For this reissue the analogue recordings were sourced from the original German analogue master tapes, newly transferred at 192kHz/24bit and remastered for CD (with a small number of exceptions). The booklet includes alternative cover designs in colour, and the notes feature a newly written introductory essay. Five Melos Quartett reissues are being released in this series.
