A notable album that caused a stir on its release as a meeting of two singular artists, restored in its original form for the first time since its first appearance. The Busoni returns to the catalogue after a long absence. Gidon Kremer (born 27 February 1947 in Riga) is a violinist from Latvia, then part of the Soviet Union, who defected to West Germany in 1980. Valery Afanassiev (born 8 September 1947 in Moscow) is a pianist, poet and writer from the Soviet Union who defected to Belgium in 1974. These two discs were recorded in Berlin in October 1987, when the two had only recently begun playing together as a duo, and the pairing of two such strong personalities, the combination of the complete Brahms violin sonatas with Busoni, and above all the expansively slow tempi, made the release much talked about. Kremer studied with David Oistrakh, Afanassiev with Emil Gilels and Yakov Zak. Both, then, were trained by great Soviet masters, both won prizes at international competitions around the world from an early age, and both left for the West before the end of the Cold War in search of greater artistic freedom. Both possess acute sensitivity, formidable intelligence and highly individual expressive powers, and their Brahms is genuinely unlike anyone else's. The first thing that strikes the listener is the sheer breadth of the tempi: the First Sonata, normally around 30 minutes, is drawn out romantically to more than 36, while the Second and Third settle at roughly 25 minutes 30 seconds each. Following the Third Sonata of 1888 comes the Second Violin Sonata written a decade later by Busoni - Italian by birth, German by career - as if to trace the line of musical history leading from Brahms towards the modern era. At around 38 minutes it too is a large-scale work, and across the two discs the four pieces form a symmetrical programme. Since the original 1991 issue went out of print, this two-disc set has never been reissued; only two of the three Brahms sonatas kept reappearing on single-disc reissues. Now the original two-disc format is reissued for the first time, with the liner notes - including the Japanese translation of "Afanassiev's message" - reproduced exactly as they were. Vintage+plus Vol. 24 comprises seven titles in all.
