Marking Neeme Järvi's 80th birthday: his second complete Sibelius symphony cycle together with seventeen orchestral works, gathered onto six discs - a landmark of his Deutsche Grammophon discography. With a newly written introductory essay. Järvi's second complete symphony cycle, following the one he recorded for BIS in his mid-forties, is combined here with seventeen orchestral works taped between 1992 and 1996, across six CDs. This is the first time the material has been boxed for the Japanese market (a seven-symphony set was previously available); the import edition was a seven-disc box, and the couplings have been rearranged to fit onto six. As a way of exploring Sibelius's major orchestral output, it is an extremely attractive set, not least in price. Neeme Järvi, who turns 80 on the release date of 7 June, made a great many recordings for BIS and Chandos from the early 1980s onwards, winning particular acclaim in Scandinavian repertoire - Sibelius above all - as well as in music by his fellow Estonians and in Russian works. His Sibelius interpretations were ranked alongside Paavo Berglund's at the time and are still admired by many listeners as straightforward, unmannered Sibelius. He went on to record extensively for Deutsche Grammophon, beginning to revisit repertoire in his mid-fifties; this cycle was set down between the ages of 64 and 67. It was, incidentally, the first complete Sibelius symphony cycle on Deutsche Grammophon to be completed by a single conductor - and remains the only one. The recordings were originally made to mark the centenary of the founding of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The earlier cycle was taped shortly after Järvi took up the post of principal conductor, whereas these DG sessions took place the year after he left the orchestra. The set is thus a summing-up of their partnership, reflecting a view of Sibelius that Järvi had built up over some twenty years. Blending a modern outlook with a Romantic sensibility, and touched with a gentle warmth, it will long be remembered as playing that dispelled the sense of estrangement Sibelius had long suffered in Central Europe. This reissue carries a newly written introductory essay by Shigeki Saeki in the booklet, citing specific examples to explain the value of these recordings - essential reading. Seven titles are being released in Vintage+plus Vol. 24.
