The fact that he proudly refers to himself as a "hero" is a sign of R. Strauss's confidence. The music is also depicted on a grander scale and with grander musical ideas than in any of his previous symphonic poems, and the descriptions are majestic. As a conductor, Ashkenazy, who is best known for his work with R. Strauss, captures the rich romance of this work in a refreshingly lively manner.
