Subtitled “Between Machaut and Dufay,” this recording marks the first reissue in Japan since 1993. Featuring a collection of medieval French secular songs, this recording was groundbreaking at the time of its release, as it shed light on secular songs from the late 14th to early 15th centuries—a period that had previously been a gap in the musical canon following Machaut. The music is astonishing; alongside the fact that complex counterpoint had already been perfected, the lyrics reflect an apocalyptic and pessimistic worldview, making these songs a rare treasure with few equals even today. Although several distinctive recordings have appeared since this one, the refined yet precise performance on this album has by no means lost its luster. If anything, the value of this recording—which conveys the content and lyrics without artifice—is exceptionally high. The London Medieval Ensemble, led by brothers Peter and Timothy Davis, was active from the late 1970s through the early 1980s. Although their active period was brief and their discography is limited, they released several important albums. Among these, the complete collections of secular music by the Flemish school—such as *Dufay: Complete Secular Music* (PROA73/5) and *Ockeghem: Complete Secular Music* (PROA40/1)—released in the early days of this Vintage Series, are particularly significant. In addition to the detailed commentary by Kazunori Imaya included in previous editions, this reissue features a new foreword and commentary by Takaki Yazawa. With the addition of song lyrics and translations, the booklet—which runs to over 20 pages—offers a wealth of information and serves as a valuable reference.
