The superb brass playing of the Berlin Philharmonic's golden Karajan years. This 1977 recording appears on CD in Japan for the first time in its original form. A landmark brass ensemble album from the legendary players of the Berlin Philharmonic's golden age - a Christmas programme for eight brass, with four trumpets and four trombones including the orchestra's principals. Festive carols, folk melodies and chorales, among them the famous "Silent Night", are played with a golden-toned sound born of German-pattern instruments and an ensemble discipline that remains a model for every brass player. The broad, brightly lit sound of the principal trumpets Konradin Groth and Martin Kretzer, and the mellow, carrying tone of the trombonists Johann Doms and Karl-Heinz Duse-Utesch, are the album's chief glories; equally, the playing makes plain that none of it would hold together without the bass trombone of Siegfried Cieslik. Recorded in 1977, the album appeared on LP in Japan at the time of its original release, but in the CD era it circulated only briefly as a German domestic import, and Japanese issues reissued a handful of tracks on compilations. It can now finally be restored with its original running order and cover image. 1977 was also the year of the Berlin Philharmonic's fifth tour of Japan (Karajan's seventh visit), which included the complete Brahms symphonies and the celebrated Beethoven symphony cycle at the Fumon Hall - a peak period for orchestra and conductor alike. Taped some three months before that tour, this is a precious document of a crucial era for the trumpet and trombone sections. Playing styles and the whole conception of German-pattern instruments have since changed, and this sound is no longer to be heard. The sessions took place in a church in Regensburg, and coming at the high point of DG's analogue era they preserve a magnificent sound, reverberation included. This reissue uses the original LP cover design, and the CD master derives from a high bit rate, high sampling frequency (192kHz/24bit) transfer of the original analogue master tape. A detailed new introductory essay by Shigeki Saeki makes rewarding reading.
