Celebrated as Mozart playing of the highest order: the recordings for the former PHILIPS label gathered in a 4-disc set. Newly transferred from the original master tapes held in the country of origin. As a set of Mozart's violin sonatas on modern instruments and in modern style, these recordings combine artistic refinement with the utmost polish. When the sessions began in September 1969 Szeryng was 51, and at the peak of his powers, having only two years earlier, in July 1967, recorded his immortal account of Bach's complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (GUCCG4610). Haebler was 43, having just completed, in June 1967, the Mozart piano sonata cycle that established her worldwide reputation (already issued as PROC-1201) - a project, then, that brought together two of the great performers of the day. Here the two produce an ideal duo partnership in tone, in technique and in musicianship. Szeryng's sound is rich and poised, shading finely between light and dark according to the character of the music; his intonation and finger work are utterly secure, his phrasing wonderfully smooth. Haebler's touch is beautifully articulated, and the changes of colour between the passages where she sings the melody and those where she accompanies are entirely natural. Their reading follows the score with a care and elegance one might almost call calligraphic, yet never becomes stiff or four-square: superb technique and an intimate rapport make the music breathe with abundant life. Recorded between 1969 and 1972, the performances appeared in the LP era both as a 6-disc box and separately, and were used in the 16-volume, 148-disc "Mozart Edition" issued by Philips in the Netherlands in 1974. In the 45-volume, 180-disc "Complete Mozart Edition" marking the bicentenary of Mozart's death in 1991 they were replaced by the digital recordings made by Grumiaux and Klien in 1981-83, and the Szeryng-Haebler set was thereafter overshadowed. To mark the 260th anniversary of Mozart's birth and the 90th anniversary of Haebler's, a new high-bit, high-sampling digital transfer (192kHz/24bit) has been made from the original analogue master tapes held in the country of origin.
