A unique recording of the Ninth Symphony from 1980, in which grandeur and sublime beauty coexist. A reissue of the digital re-recording made with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) during Böhm’s final years. Recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic approximately nine months before his death, this was Karl Böhm’s (1894–1981) fourth recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Although his official recording of “Elektra” was filmed later, this album stands as his final recording. When it was first released—after Böhm’s death—it was issued as a deluxe double-LP set. No doubt there were many people around the world who paid their respects while reflecting on the life of this maestro, who was born in the 19th century yet remained active well into the early digital age. Thirty-five years have passed since then, and the history of Beethoven performance has undergone a profound transformation. Although this performance—which held the record for the longest running time of the “Ninth” at the time of its release—may no longer seem so radical in today’s world of diverse interpretations, there can be no dispute that it still exudes a charm that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the numerous recordings. Another defining feature of this recording is its stellar lineup of singers. At the time of the recording, singers from outside the German-speaking world were making remarkable strides, and the casting of J. Norman and P. Domingo generated significant buzz. It appears that Böhm himself requested the soloists, a fact that conveys his passion for this project. With an ideal cast of singers and the Vienna Philharmonic fully understanding Böhm’s intentions as they worked together to create a definitive musical interpretation, this performance is not merely the culmination of Böhm’s career; it may not be an exaggeration to say that it captures one of the ultimate forms of Western music. Such a performance is truly unique. However, recordings that reach such a lofty, solitary pinnacle are rare indeed, and this is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces that deserves to be remembered for a long time to come. Furthermore, for this reissue, a new foreword by Atsuya Funaki has been included in the booklet. His essay, filled with affection for this recording and deep admiration for Böhm, is a must-read.
