The celebrated recordings made in Japan by the great Lola Bobesco with legendary engineer Jack Renner, gathered onto three discs (excluding the previously issued Franck and Debussy).
In January 1980 the Romanian-born violinist Lola Anna-Maria Bobesco (1921-2003) made her first visit to Japan - not at the invitation of a concert agency, but at the initiative of devoted admirers scattered across the provinces. Educated in France and active as a performer and teacher in Belgium, she inherited and upheld the Franco-Belgian school of playing, and both her performances and her stage presence carried a nobility and allure grounded in that long tradition. Her Japanese debut created a considerable stir, and a second visit followed in April 1981. Nippon Phonogram, then the Japanese distributor of Philips Records, planned a recording project and brought in engineer Jack Renner from Telarc in the United States; between 9 and 19 September 1981, during her third visit, five LPs' worth of digital recordings were made at the Niiza Civic Hall in Saitama Prefecture. The present release collects all of that repertoire on three CDs, apart from the Franck and Debussy sonatas already issued (catalogue number PROC-1818, July 2015).
Her partner is the pianist Jacques Genty (b. 1921), a fellow student from her Paris Conservatoire days. The two married in 1948 and later divorced, but continued to perform as a duo for many years. On 13 April 1946 they visited Poulenc for a coaching session on Mozart's violin sonatas; the composer, taken with their playing, handed them the score of his own Violin Sonata and encouraged them to perform it.
