This documentary follows the journey of an audacious project: bringing these artists back to their hometown to create new recordings—transcending genre, race, and generation—at legendary venues like Royal Studios, and reintroducing the music and spirit of Memphis to the modern world. Featuring Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples, as well as masters like Bobby Brand and Skip Pitts—who sadly passed away after the filming—passing on their musical legacy to the next generation of young artists. The film weaves these precious sessions together with the history of racial discrimination against Black people, symbolized by the rise and fall of Stax Records. The scenes in which these great pioneers generously pass on the secrets of their craft are deeply moving, and the “soul” of this place—quietly passed down from the past to the present—overflows from the screen.
