A Masterful Performance of Ravel and Shostakovich by Three Rising Stars of the Time This recording has never before been released in Japan. This album showcases the outstanding abilities of Previn—a versatile figure known as a conductor, pianist, and composer—as a chamber musician. While there is a 1996 re-recording of the Ravel works, this is the only recording of the Shostakovich pieces. It has never been released on CD overseas, making this the long-awaited world premiere CD release. At the time of recording, Previn was just 44 years old. While he later recorded several chamber music works for Philips and, around the same time, Brahms’ Piano Quintet (with the Aele Quartet) for EMI, his chamber music recordings are few and far between, making this a rare find. Combined with the cover art—which is rather uncharacteristic of classical music—this album stands out as a truly unique release. Featuring violinist Jan Uk Kim—who would later go on to perform as a member of the Beaux-Arts Trio—and cellist Karshbaum, this young trio delivers a performance characterized by a fresh yet tightly knit ensemble sound.
