The definitive recording, conducted by the composer himself. A recreation of Akutagawa’s masterpiece, reflecting the social climate of the time! Symphony No. 1, one of Akutagawa’s largest-scale works, is a large-scale piece for a three-pipe ensemble. It was originally composed in 1954 and reworked into four movements for its premiere the following year. Although he had already completed other significant symphonic works prior to this, this piece is highly regarded as a work that laid the groundwork for his later major compositions, such as the “Erola Symphony.” The work incorporates social events in Japan at the time of its composition as well as influences from Akutagawa’s travels to the Soviet Union (with passages reminiscent of Prokofiev and Shostakovich), and is said to vividly represent his compositional style during this period. Among the many “symphonies” composed by Japanese composers, this can certainly be called a masterpiece that will go down in history. Although he later released recordings in which he both composed and conducted the work himself, the charm of this meticulously crafted 1963 recording remains undiminished. The booklet includes detailed explanations with musical examples, and the sound quality has been improved for this release. This is the first CD reissue since 1987. It is a must-have for any collection.
